The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission recently released a damning report highlighting that several foreign owned global hearing clinics may not have your best interests at heart.
(Read more here: Hearing aid sector put on notice | Australian Competition and Consumer Commission).
This is a sad fact that I have warned people about in the past as a proudly independently owned and operated hearing specialist since 2012.
Many of the hearing clinics that you see around Australia are just ‘hearing aid shops’ owned and operated by major hearing aid manufacturers like William Demand (Denmark), Sonova (Switzerland), Starkey (America) which sell only their preferred brands.
Unfortunately, some Australians are being persuaded (too quickly and forcefully by retail salespeople) into buying the wrong hearing aid. Or they are not offered the education and support they need to get the best hearing and lifestyle outcomes. As a result, they leave their hearing aids in the drawer and regret the money they wasted.
Many of these unscrupulous clinics use shady tactics like commission based incentives to motivate their staff to sell their preferred, and often outrageously expensive brand of equipment to unsuspecting customers.
They are highly skilled salespeople and alarmingly, some have no qualifications at all. These salespeople are leading consumers to believe that their preferred solution, often unnecessarily expensive, is the only available choice.
Dealing with hearing loss is a vulnerable time and you should be able to trust that the person administering your hearing test and recommending a solution is not just doing so to get a kick-back.
If you are not planning on coming to one of Health & Hearings four clinics around Brisbane, you can still avoid being taken for a ride while getting your hearing checked by asking your hearing specialist these three questions:
This will help you ensure you are dealing with an independent clinic that has yours and the communities best interests at heart.
At a locally owned and operated clinic you’ll be able to get the attention and treatment you deserve without feeling like you are being rushed through like a number.
You should have all options available to suit your unique situation, not just what some hearing aid salesperson tells you can have.
Many of the hearing clinics around Brisbane are owned by global hearing aid manufacturers with high sales targets and lucrative incentive programs for staff.
If you feel like you are being pressured into purchasing only one option because ‘nothing else would suit your needs’ then you may need reconsider the purchase.
Avoid dealing with trained salespeople who are already counting their commission when you walk through the door and rushing you into a decision without proper hearing testing.
A qualified and experienced technician will take the extra time with your hearing test and offer independent, expert advice to ensure you get the best hearing aid for your condition, lifestyle and budget.
In 2012, I decided to establish a truly independent hearing clinic in Brisbane. I wanted to give my patients a thorough, unrushed hearing test along with advice and products that would give them the best possible outcome.
